Okay since I couldn't find any info about trans crossmember compatibility I went and did the dirty on my own. I removed an 88 4x4, T18 crossmember and a 91 M5R2, 4x4 crossmember and the difference is very clear. I'm sure this will help many in the future when doing either a 4 or 5 speed conversion or 4x4 conversion. And yes, the 2WD crossmembers ARE different as the cross bar is level with the frame and the LH gusset is at a 45 degree angle.
First there are two holes on each side of the lower frame rail for the cross bar to bolt into. The T18 was bolted to the foremost holes. The M5R2 was bolted to the aft holes. (telling me the 5 speed trans is longer, duh). I'm going to try and post pictures to explain themselves better.
The gussets on 88-96 4WD F150's and broncos are the same no matter which trans cross beam they have auto or manual. The 80-96 2WD F150's and broncos have a different DRIVER side gusset and flat cross beam regardless of trans. F250's is said to have the same x member with a gas motor and ZF trans. Diesel is a whole different ball game.
