After Repair Fuel Economy Plummeted
I searched and could not find a rational reason why this happened to
my 2016 3. 5 ecoboost 4x2.
It has 106k miles on it
What happened was at 100k I brought it in for a waterpump under warranty.
After 2 weeks I got it back, waterpump and right valve cover gasket.
The clown tech forgot to hook up the charge pipe from the air intake and did not clip down the clips to the coil packs on the right side.
Accelatorated onto the highway and lost #1 check engine flashing.
Slowed down and pulled over and it went away on startup.
Checked underhood and found issues reconnecting everything and it did it again.
Dealership had it 2 more weeks and did all the plugs and the turbos coolant lines.
Ran better, but I went from 14.5 to 11 mpg no changes in anything.
Cleaned the throttle body
Cleaned all MAF sensors.
Cleaned out the intake and the pipes.
Air filter is new Napa Gold
Trans was serviced by me 10k ago and truck was running awesome till this.
No codes
Have a high positive trim on bank 1 like +7 bank 2 is - 2
I am at my wits end. It seems like the more I drive in stop and go that is where the fuel economy is being lost.
Tried all grades of gas
Tires are at 38 psi cold like always
Where else can I look?

We see this come up on here from time to time...
Could it be that the ECM was reset to factory and all adaptive learning has to be regenerated by your driving style/habits again?

And I got a very noticeable increase in fuel mileage with the first full tank of Summer Gas and now on the second one to see if it stays over the same Route, round trip..
They take a lot of Butane OUT of the Winter mix according to Docs on this subject.
It changes the Reid Vapor Pressure (RVP) affecting vaporization of the fuel.
Increase it for Winter, reduce it for Summer in many areas, not all.
Good luck.

Since the cooling system had to be drained for water pump replacement, maybe the thermostat is stuck open or even needs replacement, wrong replacement etc.
If the engine is running excessively low in temperature, it will cause the fuel to be injected in greater volume (Longer Pulse width time). This comes about from the system temperature detections that automatically adjust fuel requirements to the Fuel Trim tables. Example is the difference in cold starts vs hot starts. Fuel is metered at different rates as well as Ignition timing is altered along with change in Idle RPM and change with Temp change...
Combine this with stop and go, it might become more noticeable.
A look at the Long term fuel tables might offer verification the fuel tables have shifted to the rich side (+).
.
As mentioned in my reply above, a second run over the same route with refill of the same gas got even better mileage at over 20 round trip. This was also in spite of long idle times in traffic and road construction both directions.
Around town often is over 15 most of the time on a 2018 5L at over 86k miles.
Just to re-mention, in many areas of the country the gas formulation has changed from Winter to Summer on May 1, by Law.
It will take at least one tank of new fuel for the program to adjust to, by fuel table shift slightly Leaner, under most circumstances.
Any change in Ethanol content also alters the Tables. These items are 'somewhat' variable for supplier control to the consumer at the pumps.
The control system is sensitive from several inputs from different Sensing sources that all combine to affect fuel usage beside the "foot" , where driven and for how long etc..

Just checked what is done to change over to Summer fuel.
Butane is greatly reduced or removed altogether and some other additives are altered.
The Butane has to be removed to stop excessive Vaporization in the Tank and system as the ambient temp. rises because it begins to Boil off/out of the mix that is normal for that chemical
The result is up to 1.7% additional heat production from the additive amount changes.
This is what I'm seeing for my increase in fuel mileage now on Summer blend.
I assume Sonoco is vey tight on handling all this as a Top Tier fuel.
Good luck.
