Knocking noise from moonroof
#791
I just want to clarify this for everyone as I have went through all of this and have had my problem resolved.
THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT ROOF POPPING NOISES!
1. Caused by the window seals sticking and causing a hard to explain popping noise.
2. Intermittent issue with some roof racks. Not sure of the cause but for me it required having my roof liner dropped and the entire moon roof rack replaced. The noise associated to this was a metal on metal knock noise coming from the passenger side roughly where the two glass panels meet.
I had my roof rack replaced about 3/4 of a year ago and haven't had an issue since. It took me about 5 trips to the service department and then finally taking the auto body manager for drive to show him the problem. I left it with them for 3 days to determine the fix.

I'm thinking mine is #1.
Especially since it is a lot less noticeable after having the roof open.

#2 will go away when the roof is opened as well. At the start it would slowly come back after closing the roof, but after a few months it would come back instantly after closing.

^ Well, I don't know then.
Definitely gone with the roof at vent or open.
Variable depending on who knows what with it closed.
May try the slick tape & see if it goes away.

"gritty noise"?
See, this is where I think this thread may go astray a bit. I think folks on here are having different noises from the moonroof, with different causes, but all going in the same thread. "Gritty" noises I could see being fixed with grease and slick tape, but "knocking" noises like the thread title says is a different issue that grease obviously wouldn't solve.

My choice of words may not have been the best. However as I got accustomed to the noise, and reading all of the posts in the thread, I started to hear the rubbing aspect of the "knocking". That likely stems from the tape being part of the solution suggestions. Regardless the noise always went, fully, away with the panel popped up in the venting position. I also did have the panel "popping" upon opening to the venting position, which is now gone. The funny thing was I got in such a habit of popping it and closing it that I found myself reaching for the button, out of pure habit, at stops when I normally just did that. So far the "noise" is gone and while I'm not 100% sold that it will last it is SO nice to hear nothing, just a quiet cabin. I know it's perception but the rest of the truck feels less well built when you drive normal roads and hear things that shouldn't be heard. For now, I'm happy. For now.

Hey all! New to this forum. Just purchased a pre-certified 2015 F150 Platinum with 9,100 miles on it, absolutely pristine condition. Immediately told the dealership that the knocking noise in the upper right hand side of the vista roof was driving me crazy. They looked at it and thought it was the headliner. Picked it up and within 100 yards i realized it was still the same. I pointed out the TSB i found that identifies the fix by cleaning the seal and applying the krytox grease. its going in this friday to have this done. Anyone had this done and will it fix the problem? Greatly appreciate feedback.
