Can anyone tell me if a full size dirt bike can be toted in a 5.5 foot box with the tailgate closed? My last 2 trucks have been 6.5 footers, but I'm thinking of stepping up to a Platinum this time around and I've never seen one with a long box.

maybe not straight on.. diagonally .. but if you want the bed closed and best strap down methods i would go with the 6.5 .. my neighbor takes his S1000RR to the track almost every weekend .. he has a SCAB 6.5 .. if i went to the track as often as he did i would have went with the SCREW 6.5

I have a SCREW w/ 6.5' bed and a Honda CRF250R, along with multiple other bikes. The tailgate will not close with the bike straight in the bed. You would either need to angle it, or get a bed extender.
I've hauled my KT 350EXC around a bunch in the 2 6.5' SCREW trucks I've had, I'm familiar with it's capabilities. Normally when we go camping, I'm pulling a travel trailer with the dirt bike in the back of the truck. If I could still get the bike in, obviously loaded diagonally, with the tailgate closed completely, I'd consider a 5.5' box next time around.

too long and the sport bike is usually shorter than a dirt bike
Want to get everyone on the internet riled up??? Go to a performance car forum and ask what oil is best and go to a truck forum and ask what bed length is better!
Personally, we couldn't have taken everything we needed to 3 separate Lake Michigan vacations if I didn't have the 6.5' bed and SCREW. No way I was leaving the kitchen sink at home!
Honestly though, there has been 10 times or so over the last 2 years that I'm glad I had the longer (standard) bed length and well worth the horrendous turning radius that comes with it. Parking is rarely an issue in my day-to-day (work lot is not tight and I spec'd my garage at home). I know and understand why 5.5' is so popular, but I'm just in the minority... and I'm OK with that. I'd be hard pressed to give up my 6.5' on my next truck... errrrr... I mean pickup.

Or go to the perf car forum and ask manual or automatic transmission. This one is skewing more towards auto or "auto" with levers and a clutch these days I suppose but yeah...do that one.
If I could spec my own garage I'd get a super duty and be done with it. If it's going to turn on a city block anyway it might as well be a truck.
I used to drive an Excursion I know what I'd be getting into. It fit in the garage easily at the time though. Those were the days
