This is what I use for my iPad Air 2, not the tightest fit in the cupholder but stays put with the exception of hard cornering. I don't have to worry much about that since most of the time I'm "Driving Miss Daisy"

No reason you couldn't modify the dash mount... cut it out so the RAM mount could fit through it.

I did consider that, honest. but it would look a bit trashy. :-) I'm mulling things through my mind. was considering a RAM floor/seat mount, with the 1 1/2 ball... Still doing some research.

I have been through about 5 different phone mounts. I finally spent some money and did it right. This is all RAM mount stuff. The suction cup could hold a dump truck and the arms are very sturdy and stable.

Obviously not a tablet and obviously not in the dash but maybe give you some ideas. RAM makes larger X-grip cradles for tablets.

This suction cup wouldn't work in this spot if you have pro trailer backup, but RAM makes all sorts of different mount types.

I used the Builtrite tray mount and then 67designs arms for my ipad mini, vhf radio head, and phone. The 67designs arms are carbon fiber, and they make a ton of mounting options. Now that I have used them, I wont use any other if I can help it. It's surprisingly solid for where it is mounted. Zero issues. I have since moved things around to have better visibility, but you get the idea.

I am having hell uploading more than a few pics, dm me if you want more pics.

Here is my ghetto setup for my 11" iPad Pro until the Built Right base and Ram parts arrive.
Earth magnets
Cabinet hinges
Gorilla glue (just on the magnets attached to the hinges)
3M clear double sided (this stuff sticks when nothing else will)
Removes cleanly and completely reversible
