What do you mean by it has Ethernet?
Yeah Ford appears to have revamped things with SYNC4 and gone to some different ways of vehicle communication. The APIM uses the LIN for some comms. It only uses 1 can bus circuit on the APIM, the other two are shorted so that if you plug an SYNC4 APIM into something like your 18 it will kill the vehicle. There is also what Ford calls ethernet (whether its true ethernet idk) that runs between the APIM, Gateway module and TCU. If you look in the 21 owner manual you can find the FCC id for the TCU and reference that for info on it.

So you're saying if you were to plug in a 2021 APIM into a 2018-19 vehicle it would completely fry the CAN-BUS?

I think this may be the TCU for the 21' F-150's. FCC ID: KMH-14H074-NA1. It seems to be capable of 5G and all other LTE bands. It also has the Wifi hotspot and Bluetooth capabilities. I'm assuming the Bluetooth feature is for communication with the vehicle's APIM.

it won’t fry them. It shorts them out killing can bus comms in those two specific can bus circuits. Basically makes the vehicle unusable until the apim is unplugged. This is for the discussion of Sync3 to sync4 conversion however.

as for the tcu fcc ID. Yes that is what is listed in the owners manual.

I figured as much. From what I can tell the previous LHJ-FANW TCU was manufactured by Continental Automotive whereas this TCU was manufactured by Ford based on the FCC filings for the KMH-14H074-NA1 TCU.

Here are the differences between the two:

LHJ-FANW:
- Wifi 802.11b/g/n
- CDMA bands 2 and 5
- LTE bands 2, 4, 5, and 17

KMH-14H074-NA1:
- Bluetooth
- Wifi 802.11b/g/n, 802.11a/n, 802.11n, 802.11ac
- CDMA bands 2, 4, and 5
- LTE bands 2, 4, 5, 12, 17, and 66

The most obvious differences I can see are the added LTE & CDMA bands (potentially for 5G?), upgraded wifi standards for quicker connection speeds, and Bluetooth connectivity through the TCU. I am assuming the Bluetooth connectivity is between the TCU and the APIM, but I could be wrong.

Finally got it working with Sync 2.0. Used the J model TCU and it activated right away!

Thanks neilc1 for being stubborn on getting this working on Sync 2!

next question. I have only a binfu stick on antenna now. Has anyone tried both and determined if the factory antenna is any better? I don’t want to go a
as far as doing the shark fin in my 2015, but is a second antenna helpful?

congrats,
where'd you find the J ?

me? stubborn?, No, lucky, I'm a user here, had lots of help from the brains above us,

I am only running a single factory antennae on the lower back wall of the cab, no shark fin, no issues, no interest in hotspot either though,
jm061 would caution otherwise,
I think, not sure, if you want hotspot , you need more antennae.
