Yes, I have a non -nav Sync 3 running 3.4 from this thread. And as much as I like Android auto ( I was one of the first to "testers" to get it in Dec 2016 before JM061 released it to the public), I'd love a Nav Apim if I could score one for <$200. Not sure why AA discouraged it.

It's more complex than you would expect. I've done a few of them and I'm not going into detail in this thread on the topic.
@DanMc85 has a full writeup on the process here: http://www.2gfusions.net/showthread.php?tid=3881
I'm sure @TexasFording will help you out or sell you one if you want to do a swap.
I checked out the link provided - I think I should clarify. My truck came with Sync 3, I was just wondering about the ease of going from a Non-Nav to a Nav Apim. I'm only considering it if the cost would be in the $200 or less range - otherwise , to me it's not worthwhile.

Sorry for the hijack...

I sent you a PM fordxlt, didn't want to clutter the thread.

I discouraged it because very few owners have little to gain from swapping in a factory navigation enabled APIM if they already have Sync 3. Some people think a factory navigation APIM is required for maps to work in Android Auto or Apple CarPlay which is not true. The cost and time required can easily amount to over $500 and take over an entire weekend, some guys sell them for nearly $1200 and I just don't see any value in that. If you are a pro at bartering and know the right people you might be able to hit your target price point, but I seriously doubt it.

Dan's writeup still applies to your situation. His guide still pretty much explains the entire process even though he came from Sync 2.

I'm not intending to be negative or scare you away for doing it. I'm just trying to be realistic. I don't know of anyone who has installed Sync 3 with Nav for less than $200 and the trade off if you already have Sync 3 is minimal at best.

The APIM I got, the guy had listed on ebay for $280 and I offered $200 which he accepted, he still had a couple more listed the last I checked, although they weren't third gen. As far as it taking long, all I did was swap the APIM, load my backup as built from my old non-nav APIM and then changed 7D0-01-02 x*xx xxxx xxxx to 2. I was done in about 20 minutes. Maybe there is more I was supposed to do, I'm no expert by any means, but it's working perfect so far. Once again thanks for all of your hard work getting the 3.4 and 19 maps working.

While I've been using Google maps thru Android Auto almost daily for going on 4 years now, including loading many areas of off-line maps - There remains a value in Factory Nav.
What the dollar value of that feature is, I'm not sure - but something nearing $200 peaked my interest.
I've added a center console, heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise, trailer brake controller, hill descent switch & an 8" cluster to my XLT for which I've had my APIM out on a few occasions. I don't think there's hardly a weekend involved in all my mods combined, and it's time I enjoy - in any case.
I'm with Stang69428, I think the APIM swap would take me maybe 20 minutes.
My only real question to this swap is whether a different GPS antenna is needed.
Dan's link doesn't answer this as it's a swap from my Ford touch, which doesn't apply.
I appreciate all your contributions to this forum, and concede your expertise exceeds mine. I understand you don't think it's worth it, but I think you're overstating the difficulty.

I have a 2016 Platinum and I would lose zero sleep if I got in the truck this morning and my factory navigation function had vanished.

Not to derail the thread, but I see deals close to that all the time on eBay or scrap yards with a webpage. I got a screen and Nav APIM for $90 at one point, just have to know what to look for. Just like any other task, there are some people who don't know a philips screwdriver from a flathead, those people shouldn't be trying to swap APIMs. For those that are fairly handy and are comfortable removing some trim and their bezel, and won't come on here and make a thread titled "help plz truck won't start after radio mod", I see no reason to not upgrade to a Nav APIM if the deal presents itself.

Sounds like Factory Nav is for you then. I agree there is value in Factory Nav, but only for a few owners such as those who desire reliable maintenance-free offline navigation. From experience, usually by the time I explain all the navigation options, platforms and processes to owners, they completely lose interest in trying to add it.

Whenever I post something online I take into account the hundreds of other people who are also going to read it which is why I respond with a such a broad (often negative) outlook. I have no doubt some people on here can easily do it in 20 minutes for $20, but I think most people realistically can't achieve similar targets.

I think you're in a good position to proceed, but I won't hesitate to advise against it again the next time the topic comes up from someone else.

I try to reply to most questions with the assumption that everyone is a day 1 Ford owner so that in 10 years from now when some kid buys a used truck and visits this website there will be some sense of what can be modified, how and why.

Just updated my sister’s 2018 Escape from 2.3 to 3.4. She had nav and it worked perfectly. Thank you. I did the same on my 2019 F-150 but I noticed that the new maps lost a new street that my old version had. Is it possible that there are two versions of the 1.19 maps?
