To those who have an aftermarket exhaust installed: what's does the "break in" really mean? I had magnaflow installed for a week, but it was still loud to my liking (I want to have zero volume increase at highway speed), so ended up going back to stock (never sell your stock parts right away!). Do you mean the system changes sound over time?

Not today but this past weekend. We took a nice drive round trip to Savannah, Georgia (600 miles almost all highway). Traffic was great, the roads were great, the company was great, and unofficial estimates show about 22 mpg for the trip.

"Break in", "Burn in", even heard it called "Run in". On a packed type muffler, the sound deadening material that is "packed", between the casing, and the perforated pipe down the center, settles, sometimes blows out, rearranges itself, as it is heated up, cooled down. Usually the sound changes after it's been run for awhile.
Mine have gotten louder, but deeper, and better sounding. In fact, both Borla STypes I've had, were very quiet on initial start. The first time I thought I screwed up, I wanted more sound. Didn't take but a couple 200 mile trips, and it sounded great. My present SType, same thing.
Depends on how you do it. If you just run a few miles at relatively low speeds, like in town, it's going to take longer than say running at expressway speeds for a couple hundred miles.
Don't know if you remember the olde bullet shaped glass packs, they actually used fiberglass as the packing, it didn't take long to burn them in, to the point that in not too long a time frame, all you had left was a casing. Being stupid kids we thought it sounded good, it really didn't.

ahhh this explains why mine packed so fast .. I’ve done about 80 miles since the install.. a lot highway but also different speeds through 3 towns.. I could swear initially it was hardly any improvement over stock.. but man cold starts now sound like an angry rottweiler

What did you say to them to get them to attempt a sync update? I cannot get my truck to update after numerous calls to the 'help line' and trying every trick on the internet. And I've been given the run-around by the dealer when I ask for them to attempt the update.

Oil change, tire rotation, 10 speed transmission TSB for harshness, recall, and had them check the rear leafs since it's starting to clunk again. Gonna go pick it up in a bit.

They advised me to go to syncmyride.com and do the install via USB drive. Guess I'll give it a shot.

So you are saying it will become louder after it "breaks in"?

Not in my case, it couldn't get any louder I just have the resonator, no muffler.
