Now that is one that has had me confused. Why limit colors? It's not as if certain orders change the body in some way to make it special that it can only be built when that color is being sprayed. They limit the Limited to 4 colors, making it hard to want one if you don't like any of the for colors, but then again, it IS Ford where you can have it any color as long as it is black. I get some of the option bundles where you can only get this item if you get this package and not that package, but the color choices, that just seems so rudimentary.

I don't get that either. Antimatter blue and smoked quartz would look amazing imo in a sport package but it's not available. Sport packages have always been the same 6 or 7 colours for the last 6 years. I don't get that.

Choosing Limited also forces you into the short bed (5.5 feet), the 3.5 EcoBoost and 22 inch wheels.
As for the color limitations I imagine this all has to do with assembly line efficiency. I read somewhere here (possibly even in this thread) that color choice alone would dictate which factory assembles the truck. I'd bet that is because each color would require it's own paint room or they would have to change colors in the paint rooms which would cost money and slow them down. It would probably waste a lot of paint and the cleaning chemicals themselves and perhaps even impact consistency in color and finish. Apply that same logic to the rest of the build process and I can see where the bean counters would call the shots on some of this.
I'm not defending them by any means but I do get it.

Will need to confirm, but pretty sure Ford uses the same paint booth technology as other manufacturers that can switch colors automatically. They use water bourne paints that are easily purged and recovered so they can switch between one body and the next. I watched a video of it a while back, but can't locate which one since it was about the entire building process and about an hour long video.
About the 6:18 mark you can see the purge can that is used to switch colors. It's for the BMW plant. Pretty neat process too.
