For those that have been bashing the frunk as stupid, maybe they can get Ford to come up with a small motor that can be slid in or out in five minutes to give them extended range that won't have to be lugged around all the time?
Personally, can't wait until the trucks have much better range and super fast charging, I'd love to be able to use that space for storage. Being able to shift gear in that area would make the balancing act that is setting up weight distribution a bit more interesting.

Is there a thread where we can have an adult educated discussion about this new EV F150 truck?
I'd like to discuss things like AWD/4WD, winter driving, battery performance in cold wether, launching boats, how deep in water can we go, will water impact the motors... and so on.
Not a bunch of rhetoric spewed by a some folks who seem content at only bashing everything they see with uneducated responses.

Hey, I'm not upset... lol!
I think between the Powerboost and the Lightning that Ford is set to kill the market in EV trucks!
Who else is at the stage Ford is at right now? No one...
And...just because it works for me, doesn't mean it will work for everyone.
The torque alone in the lightning is insane!!!

Those electric motors are torque monsters, i was looking at the design using special capacitors rapid discharge pulse made for electric motors starting up.. quit a lot tech,,,essentially a supercharger for electric motors and saving the battery discharge

Most EVs are below 300 miles...it's been a long time since I've had an ICE vehicle with range that poor. And it's much worse in the winter.
It is slowly getting better, but they will need to get to over 300 miles in the winter at a reasonable cost before I'd be comfortable with one as an ICE replacement. If we were buying today, keeping the pickup and replacing our van with a Pacifica Hybrid would probably make the most sense.

BUT, I am not poo pooing anyone who wants to own one. It's great to be able to buy things we want instead of only what we need. The problem is not with the truck or what it can do. The problem is for anyone who looks at the current truck EV's and infrastructure and thinks that they would be perfect for anything more at this time than a fairly local commuter vehicle with some utility. It's wouldn't be much different than complaining about the Corvette's capabilities because you want one for the family car but have a family of four and a dog.

Yeah, I mean that is possible, but I've been hearing similar things for over a decade now. I could be wrong but I don't believe they have figured out that kind of battery technology yet, let alone a way to manufacture it efficiently and in large volumes. If they manage that, great, but I'm not holding my breath. I don't think Tesla and others would have made such huge investments in Lithium Ion battery production if they thought it was going to be temporary.

That being said, one of the major constraints with today's battery tech is the cost, and most of the increases in range have come from significant manufacturing capacity finally coming online and reducing the cost. Supposedly we're about a year away from reducing battery cost to the point that an EV costs just slightly less than an equivalent gas car and that's a theory I'd put some stock in since costs have been coming down at an accelerating rate and it's based on manufacturing capacity rather than some technology/chemistry breakthrough.
This is partially why the early EVs were so crappy. They were basically $10K econoboxes strapped to a $30K battery. Tesla's big innovation was taking a $40K car and strapping it to a $30K battery and actually making something people wanted rather than trying to match the price of a Honda Accord.

Coool idea and Kudos to Ford for bringing it out. Personally, No use for one. When we go on trips, it's bad enough having to pull over for fuel at least 3 times (haven't tried it with the new F150 so it may be better), but now you have to wait even longer to charge it? F no.
If I lived in/near the city, didn't go on trips, only had MINOR DIY stuff going on, The Lightning would be great... until I had to get the batteries replaced. F that.
