Not sure if this was posted but here's my addition for under $50. Receiver tow hook from etrailer.com for ~$34.

More often than you would think.

I live about 50 miles due south of Chicago in an agricultural and there are lots of back roads. The wind blowing across all the farmland creates icy spots and drifts so I usually end up pulling folks out as I find em.

I considered that before I installed the tow hooks, I just preferred something permanent

I just use my receiver ball, that looks pretty neat though.

I might have to install those in a year or 2, we get our fair share of employees that get in the ditch on the way to work in a snowstorm.

ever seen the end result when a hitch ball snaps at the shank? I have. it came flying back through the windshield, and through the drivers seat headrest. fortunately the driver was leaning out the drivers window and only got some scratches from flying glass.
true it was probably a rare occurance or a poor quality ball but either way after witnessing that I wont ever do that now

No I haven't, but I have the thick shaft ball, highest rated towing. I could see it happening with the smaller shaft ones though, ouch! Definitely dangerous, I make sure I wrap my strap around it and around the nut because I have seen the nylon straps fly off or break and cave in whatever it hits. Not good to do if you don't know what you are doing for sure!
