I bet some of the sound change has to do with where the cut is made effecting how the sound waves bounce off the underbody of the truck. Just a theory.

I wouldn't do it for the simple fact that if I'm sitting in deep snow with the truck idling, I don't want the exhaust trapped under the truck and creeping into the cab.

I would just call that a reminder that if you're sitting in deep snow, you're supposed to be busting donuts. not just idling.

I do this to all my trucks because I don't like the way it looks. I cut the tip off right near the exhaust hanger so that the over-the-axle pipe is still supposed.

Yup, I put on a 14" magnaflow and cut off my tailpipe. I went to the auto store and bought a turndown tip and exaust clamp.

Mine is aimed at a 45deg angle behind the tire.

The tip was 3" I believe and I had to cut slits on either side and pinch it with the clamp to make it fit.

On my other trucks, you would have more exhaust sound in the cab driving slow, but once you got up to highway speed, it was quiet. I guess it depends on where you cut it. I like to cut it after the axle, on the strait piece, about 3" before it bends back horizontal. That way, I can get it put back on easily, if I need to, and it's shooting the hot exhaust to the ground.
