Well, i was able to pick up a Leer 100XR shell, in white, reasonably cheap on CL for my Flame blue 2014 FX4 157. The shell was white so while it is sitting on the truck at the moment I knew I had to paint it. Since it won't be a all year round fixture I was toying with painting it myself although it is nearly 30 years since my rallying days since I did any painting.
Anyhoo, I was looking at the shell today to get a key code off the lock and thought, sh**, there is a chip of blue paint on the bottom rear corner of the shell. How did I manage to do that. So looked a bit closer and looked at the windows and the leer badges and saw that it had been painted and there was some overspray on them (yeah, I know I should have looked more closely when I bought it but it was filthy at the time and I priced it accordingly) .
Soooo, scratched away a little bit more at the corner and lo and behold, more blue paint, in fact blue flame!!!!! WTF????!!!! So it was blue flame from the factory and now painted white. AAAAGGHHHH!!!
So question for you painters out there. What are the chances of being able to carefully sand back the white without doing too much damage to the layer underneath? Would it be possible to then get away with one more blue top coat and a clear coat or would I be starting from scratch with primer???

I just ordered a snugtop xtr. had to refinance the truck anyways and don't owe that much on it so I just rolled it into that. having a new baby and making multiple trips to new mexico for skiing figured this was the best solution to my problem of things getting wet other than putting everything in trash bags and hoping for the best. i also having them install led bed lights under the rail so that itll light up the backend. i like the xtr a lot. otherwise i wouldn't have gotten a shell at all. ive had hard tonneau covers before and to be honest they were just as hard to remove. so i figured why not get something i can haul all the dogs in when they need to go to the vet and solve two problems.

FYI That Tri coat paint is a bitch to match & I had the same problem. I was told by the painter that Ford used different base coat tints of the white for the first stage depending on when the truck was produced and there are three UG paint codes shown. Mine was terribly off when it arrived and I ended up leaving the gas cap with them for the match, now it is nearly perfect and was painted twice.
On the stress crack, I would not accept a repair either I would want new shell, be sure to take a photo of the serial # tag on the left just inside the door so they don't repair and send you the same one and try telling you it is a new one.

Hey guys just ordered a Ranch sierra cap.I am getting it installed next week.I am an electrician, and have 2 small boys so I need the dry storage.
. I had a retrax roll up bed cover and had to go thru 2 of them because they cracked.
At least now anything taller than the bed rails I can fit it in.

Love My Topper paint matched and tinted.
I love my topper bought it for camping gear, the 85lb dog to ride in and for hauling tools and keeping all the above safe and locked.
