Question Oil Change - Is it Cheaper to DIY?

I like changing my own oil. I always have on every vehicle I ever owned.
But is it really cheaper to DIY in 2023?
I have a 13' 5.0 V8, it takes about 8 quarts of oil. It costs at least $50 after oil and filter. Plus add in my own personal time required.

Am I better off taking it to a drive through oil change place like Jiffy Lube, Valvoline, etc?
What is your experience?

on my personal vehicles... I will not let anyone touch them.
On work vehicles... I ride the quick lube dolts so hard they hate when I come through.

Yes it’s cheaper. Seems lots of places are charging near $100 for an oil change around here these days.

I can do MC full synthetic and an MC filter for less than half that.

Even if more expensive, I'd still do my own oil changes. Screw those places overcharging people for a simple oil change. No thanks.

Do it one time yourself, and take it to a quick lube one time, then decide for yourself.

question answered!

Rock Auto for filters, usually less than $5 each when you buy a dozen. Costco for synthetic oil, $40 for 10 quarts.

The cheap prices at Jiffy or others are for conventional oil. (if they actually change it at all) Switch to synthetic and the price jumps to $100 or so. Ford was actually cheapest, using the semi-synthetic in the Quick lane. I mean, cheapest shop.

Now all my kids change their own, too. I enjoyed watching my daughter teach a teen friend of hers how to do recently. They come over and use my garage.

I have never trusted any of the quick change places. I just don’t trust what kind of oil they are putting in. I feel much more comfortable just changing it myself.

My truck is at 156K, it gets a new filter and MC oil every 5K, done by me. By the time I would drive to the one dealer I would trust, I would be cleaning up!

I also use the DIY oil change as a time to check over the rest of my vehicles.

A couple years ago, doing an oil change my daughters RAV4 on a Saturday afternoon, I noticed a bit of green coolant. After a bit of looking, saw a small split in the radiator. Came in and ordered a replacement radiator from RockAuto. She drove the wife's car for the next couple days, radiator came in, replaced and new coolant, daughter had her car back by Tuesday after work.

even though it's more work, I also do my own tires rotations, every other time. I get free rotate/balance from Discount Tire but I do a rotation only every other time. This way I can check brakes, shocks, etc. if I hustle, I can beat Discounts time.

If you shop around for oil and get the rebate deals, you can do changes, including a good filter, for about $20. And that is for decent oil like Pennzoil Platinum.

my last oil score I got 20 quarts of Pennzoil Platinum for $37 or something. So when I change my oil, the oil costs about $12 and then what ever the filter costs.
