Default Spare tire holder/Bed tire holder

Hey all,

I am weighing my options for an over sized tire holder for the bed of my truck. Currently I have a tri-fold cover on the bed. I know with some tire holders this will have to be removed. Interested in seeing what you have that you're using and what you like/dislike about the set up. I have an 8 foot bed so lots of bed space. I've been debating on getting a rack for the tire which would force me to remove the tri-fold cover but then I change my mind and want to keep the cover. Tire size is 315/70/17. Let me know what you think! Thanks!

If you don't have a backup camera, or will only be using this tire carrier for offroad jaunts, then perhaps this removable solution may be an option:

Towing ability is preserved...

thanks for the response and photos. i have seen these and it is nice that it keeps the bed opened however im not a big fan of the style and would like a more permanent set up.

Have you tried fitting your current tire size back there? I think it'll fit, especially because you have an 8' bed.

I personally have the same overall diameter as you but I just kept the stock tire. Shouldn't damage anything if your diff is open and 4x4 isn't engaged. Might pull a little to one side and ABS *might* get a little wonky, and a warning light will come on but it should be fine to get to a shop or wherever you need to be.

i do still have the normal spare underneath just in case i get in a pinch. i dont think the larger tire will successfully fit under there. with the shield and the exhaust i don't think it would work out. plus, the tire would be visible below the bottom of the truck which would bother me for 2 reasons: 1 being plain old looks/aesthetics / 2 being clearance.

I was trying to figure out how big of a spare I could mount under my truck in the stock location, since I have larger tires on truck. I guess I wouldn't have to worry about it if I used this solution. It Iooks pretty good too. I would still like to know how large I can go underneath if anyone knows. Thanks for post

Does it interfere with your reverse sensors on rear bumper?

Yes it does, and the OEM backup camera if equipped. That's why the owner of the Overland Tremor eventually removed it and instead strapped the spare on top of his new Decked system in the bed.

When I get a second spare (the exact same wheel setup as my regular wheels), I will still use this spare carrier but only out on the trails, and using a Garmin backup camera attached to their Overlander GPS; it will be removed for daily driving.

You can fit up tp a 35.08" Ridge Grappler without removing the factory aluminum heat shield:

A stock differential cover will have plenty of clearance, but because I installed a Mag-Hytec differential cover, it does get within an inch of it with a +2.25" net lift block (which rotates the top of the axle towards the spare); it never touched the spare during my last offroad excursion. But to reduce axle wrap, which would be the only way for the cover to rotate into the spare, I will be swapping in ProComp Add-a-Leafs (taking out ProRyde blocks and restoring the original 1.25" OEM blocks since the Add-a-Leaf adds +2" lift by itself):

To keep the tire as tucked up under the bed as possible, I selected the Ridge Grappler LT285/75R18, which Nitto specs out as being 35.08 x 11.26, an inch narrower than the rest of the tires, and IMO is not noticeable at all from the driving height of a following car:

Cool. Kinda looks like a Bronco or Jeep with the swing setup!
