Default Upholstery question

I have been looking at converting my XLT to leather. read around and I am considering several different options:

1) clazzio seat covers
2) road wire/ katskin fabric replacements
3) custom upholstery

I have read and know about the first 2, but has anybody had any custom work done at the local upholstery shop? If so, my questions is this: Is there any special requirements or instructions needed to accommodate for the side airbags of the front seats?

thanks!

I have Katzkin 2 tone leather in my XLT, had a shop In Vancouver BC do the work ASC Customs and they added seat warmers to the buckets. they picked the truck up and dropped it off.....I didn't do a dam thing.......and they added a Moon roof for me......Im sure you being in Cali there are a ton of great shops.....
NO PREP work needed.......

we have Ford Leather in Our FX4 Captian Chairs and its not as soft as the Katzkin, mine is soft and you just relax sitting in them I find the Ford leather hard could be the foam difference in the 2 But either way mine are 100% nicer then our stock leather. Don't get me wrong the leather is still nice in the FX4, but the katzkin in mine is nicer to sit in is all......
Katzkin has 4 different styles to choose from depanding on seat style....Heaters and massagers

Most custom shops will just install the Katskins or Classic Soft Trim kit (or other kit) made for the vehicle. The only way they will usually build it from scratch is if you want something that the kit companies don't make like an exotic animal skin or a crazy color combination. If you went true custom, it will cost you a whole lot more than just having a kit installed.

As far as your seat airbags go, it's been several years since I was in the industry and I could be remembering incorrectly, but I think there have to be special accommodations made for them such as special thread and things like that. A reputable interior shop will be able to answer all your questions.

Cover King seat covers. They also make custom seat covers, and have provisions for the air bags. Unlike some, like Katskin, that replace the upholstery, these ones slide over the existing fabric. I have the wetsuit one, the fit and finish is great. When the get dirty, I just slip them of and throw them in the washing machine.

On their website coverking.com the ordering process is very specific, you have to answer several questions about your truck, so they know exactly what seats you have.

The also make a fake leather called leatherette. It looks and feels like leather, but costs less than the leather ones that they also sell. Pictures are in my garage to see fit and finish.

Happy hunting

You can get Katskin seat covers on eBay cheaper than you can from an upholstery shop. A lot of people use them in VW's and say that they're better than oem. VW has really nice leather seats too so that's saying a lot.

I've used Roadwire on my last two trucks. They both worked out perfect.
