Default Wireless Charging Center Console

The idea for this project came from my dad's truck. He has a 2018 Silverado 2500 HD High Country. On the top of the console lid is a wireless charging tray to place your phone.

I had the idea to cut out a hole in my console and install that charging tray into my '10 lariat 4x2 5.4L.

I really had no idea where to start so off to YouTube I went. I found a channel that has done retrofitting of the charger module because GM vehicles with that console lid have the tray, but not the module.
So, to power the module this guy makes a pigtail connector (https://harnessdr.com/product/2014-2...rofit-harness/) that ties into the rear 12v plug. I wasn't sure that the connectors into the back of the 12v were the same on both trucks. So, I removed the rear panel to look at the connector, and sure enough, the connectors looked to be the same. I ordered the harness and it plugged in just fine when I received it.

Now my next step was to figure out how the lid holds the charger and the tray. There are mounting holes for the tray and the charger on the underside of the lid on the GM vehicles. I knew I needed the tray and the rubber mat and the module, but I knew there was no other easy way to attach the tray and for it to have a housing as the Ford lid is much thinner than the GM lid. So, I ordered the entire lid assembly so that I could guarantee I would have all the necessary parts. (https://www.tascaparts.com/oem-parts...mrest-84593069) What I didn't know, is that the lid assembly is cheaper than the module itself, and the lid assembly comes with the charging module. (https://www.gmpartsdirect.com/oem-pa...odule-13521066) I received all my parts after a long wait from Tasca and began work on deconstructing the lid assembly on both the GM lid and my Ford lid.

After removing the trim underbelly from the GM lid I found an existing module to my surprise. I thought long and hard about how to merge to two together to make the new lid 'feel' OEM. I determined that the only way for the two to be merged would be to cut out the charging tray area on the GM lid and cut a hole in my existing lid after peeling the leather back. Lots, and I mean LOTS of dremel work to cut out the tray area on both lids in my hot garage. After all the parts were cut out I went back and forth fitting the tray underneath my lid until it fit just right. I added some hot glue to hold it in place and used some screws to attach the two pieces of plastic together.
Later I added some extra hot glue to get the leather to fold over the edge better. Once the tray was installed I tested it again even though I had already tested the module to ensure it was working properly, and it worked both times. So I started work on restapling the leather back on the sides and a hand staple gun simply does not have enough power to puncture into the plastic. Fortunately, I have a 20 gal compressor and bought a staple gun from Lowe's. Even the staple gun struggled, but was miles better than the hand stapler. I did not staple the leather into the tray like it was originally on the GM as I wanted to be able to tweak it later without having to pull staples and reattach them later, and the screws that hold the tray down were enough to keep the leather very tight. I put back the lid bracket that holds it to the console and started to think about how I was going to run the cable to it. I originally thought I would just drill a hole in the back of the console to behind the back trim where the connector was but after feeling around, the flow thru pipes are there and you cannot do that. After some pushing I realized that the side panel of the console has some budge and connects between the back compartment and the storage compartment. I wired it all up and screwed everything together and it all charges.

There are a few imperfections where the screws are and the foam gets a little funky, but i plan on smoothing it out to look cleaner. All in all this was a very fun first 'real' truck project other than my stereo and a tailgate assist. This is the underside of the lid installed for those wondering.
I plan on cutting out a hole for the tray and module on the existing Ford underbelly trim that holds an MP3 player and a "cell phone" and cutting of the tips of the screws too. If you've made it this far, thanks for reading!

This is a pretty awesome and very practical mod. I like it! Considering how long wireless charging has been around and how more common its become over the past few years one of my disappointments with Ford is the lack of a wireless charger in the F150 (at least that I know of). Very cool how you used a GM part and fit it all together, it looks factory.

When I had my 2004 I did this same thing although it was not as clean as yours. I removed the fabric on the lid and cut out a space in the foam and inlayed a wireless charger in and recovered everything. It worked however without the recessed space like yours my phone always slid off the console on turns so I rarely ever used it. I now have a wireless charging dash mount that works very well for me. If I didn't have it I'd be doing this same mod this weekend! How much did all the parts run you?

The lid assembly is around 90 bucks but I ended up with some new tools (a dremel and a pnuematic staple gun) so around 150 there, and with shipping from Tasca it was 50 there so all in all about 300 but could definitely be done for cheaper than that. I also looked at it as something I would get daily use out of and I plan on keeping this truck for a good while. I have an iPhone X and currently don't have a case on it so it will slide to the top of the tray and stop charging, but when I put a case on it it should be just fine.
