really annoyed at myself for that brain fart...
At least you figured it out before you started tearing it apart again.

Yeah, i didn't realise the older unit used heater valves instead of a blend door.

Starting to really look like I need a custom radiator. The truck holds temp fine, but when towing a 3,300lbs trailer it starts to slowly heat up above 55mph. Thought about it when it started and cranked the heater up and that actually helped. Looks like I'll need to get a custom 4 core for this thing.....

I don't remember so I'll just ask. Did you use electric fans on your build?

Yes. I have a set from a 2010 and they're wired to cone on 10 degrees apart from each other. Driving unloaded it cycles 1 of them, but towing it had both singing the entire time..... 3 if you count my heater.

I'm starting to seriously consider just doing a SAS on this. I see this thing eating up rack and pinions already with these 37s.... plus I could push the wheelbase forward a few inches to keep the tires out of the fenders......

Where do you find your V10s? I've seen lots on car-part.com but the wreckers always seem to want $3000+ for even a high mileage example. I'm waiting to find one at Pick N Pull so I can nab it for $300. I found a 2V there last year but wanted to hold out for a 3V.

Unfortunately they sell for $3k+. If you're doing a swap buy the whole truck for $4-5k. Now that I'm looking at doing a SAS I would be SO FAR AHEAD money wise. Plus you can part out what you don't use.

To say that I am frustrated with this truck would be an understatement at this point. I've sourced a local radiator shop to build me a custom radiator to fix the cooling issues. Had to drive the truck/trailer to a neighboring town last night to pick up something AWESOME for my truck and the power steering pump started to whine. Tossed some fluid in it, the whine went away and thought nothing of it. Checked it again and it was low. Put some more in it so that I could park the trailer (Just parked it in the street since it is a lot easier to park in the daylight) and I see this in front of me. The rack and pinion decided to exit stage left. It apparently doesn't like being a half ton on 37s.

Go to the local part store to get some more fluid (just needed to get it out of the way at this point) and I price out a new rack... $650!!! and that doesn't even include the $100 core!!! You know what I can get for $650 also?! A freaking Dana 60! For $1100 I can get a Super Dana 60 with 4.88 factory gears and radius arms!! I know that I stated that I wanted to do this in the future, but I was REALLY hoping to space out the time from this thing bleeding my bank account dry!!

Tossing in a used rack from the local yard will all in all end up costing me $250, but that also leaves me with that question moving forward. Is it the tires/weight of the engine? When I'm towing out in the woods, will this end up leaving me stranded? How long will a used one last me when this one died so fast when it had given me no issues before.

I need to start an only fans account and just see if I can make money yelling at this stupid thing.

Well after a week to calm down, we have a new game plan. I'm definitely not giving up on this project.

I can get a used rack and pinion for less than $100, so that will get us back on the road. It also allows me time to get the axles to swap in and try to source some wheels as well..

I found a 2010 Super 60 150 miles from me with factory 4.88 gears for $1,100. Comes complete with radius arms and steering box. Hoping to swap in a tru trac at the same time, but that will depend on funds at the time.

The rear will get a 2011+ 10.5 with the factory E locker. I'll drill/tap the housing for the speed sensor that's on the ring gear when I swap in the 4.88s.

For suspension I'm kind of leaning towards a 4 link. I'll more than likely have to make taller buckets for the coilovers that the truck has now,, but that shouldn't be a huge issue.

The wait now is that all of this will require custom bracketry. Hoping to get my burn table up and running soon so that I can start designing everything for this swap!

This is basically turning into a body swapped Superduty! 🤣🤣
