Stereo question
Hello everyone! Happy Thanksgiving!! I picked up a stereo at a U-Pull it salvage yard it's out of an 2006 Freestyle.. I have a 2004 F150 FX4 Crew cab. I'm wanting the AUX input. I have the dash tray out of a 2007 F150 XL.. I have wired in the AUX input to the 3rd plug in that was capped off behind my stock 04 stereo. But for some reason I cant get the AUX to work.. Is there something I'm missing? Is there an external part needed to make it work? I have attached pictures of the stereo's. Thanks..

On those factory radios, the only point of the extra 8 pin Aux input plug was for Sirius satellite radio. There was no independent aux input to plug an MP3 player in.
The wiring loom in our trucks are pretty standard (XL, XLT, Lariat, ect are all wired the same, the differences is the equipment in the truck, and inside the fuse box and if there's a contact for the fuse). You are missing the Sirius Satellite radio receiver (which sits under the radio inside the dash) because you had the single CD, non-MP3 style radio. You may be missing the the fuse for the satellite receiver (if there is a fuse).
Factory non-powertrain parts for one trim level are not swap-able to another higher or lower trim level. If you want to add something to your truck, it has to be aftermarket. (You do notice how the plugs on the back of the radios are different between the 2004 and 2006, right?)

Going aftermarket gets you much much more anyway.
I got a Boss in-dash Nav system with Bluetooth and backup camera. It plays DVD’s for the kids while driving, hands free calling, music streaming, and nav. I had a shop install the head unit and wire in the backup camera to the reverse trigger for $120, I ran the line under the truck myself to save money. All in all I have about $400 in it with all of the aforementioned benefits.

I was just wanting to keep stock look .. I'vedecided to go with an aftermarket headunit. I've had many different aftermarket stereo system.. I like Kenwood double din. I'm looking for a new one now.. I'm also in the process of building a under seat sub enclosure to fit a 12" Boston Acustic..

IIRC there used to be a dongle available to convert the AUX input to RCA, which should subsequently be an easy adaption to 3.5mm. I don't know if such a device is still available or not.
