Exclamation 2000 F150 4.2L getting P0340 and P1309

Hi there,

I am hoping that someone on here can help me. Let me give you a timeline up until today.

About 3 weeks ago, my serpentine jumped the power steering pulley and I had to be towed home. After removing the belt, I discovered the pulley was broken and had to be replaced. So that night, I got a new pulley and, after great collaboration with my neighbor, replaced the broken one. The power steering pump was put back on the motor, a new belt installed and I was back in business. Or so I thought.

For about the last week, the belt or one of the pulleys has been squealing and randomly chirping. This is a new belt mind you. The squealing isn't so bad, but tonight on my drive home the SES light came on and gave me the two codes above.

What in the world could have caused that have happened and how do I fix it?

Thank you so much in advance for any help!

Justin

I have been reading about the camshaft position sensor and it seems like I am going to need a particular tool in order to successfully replace this sensor. Is this the case?

You do not need a special tool for the cam sensor. It just bolts in! The cam synchronizer on the other hand calls for one but really isn't needed unless the synchronizer got smashed over. If you get an aftermarket synchronizer then it will come with the tool. I have the tool but rarily use it. I just index the old on where it is located. Mark the body and the rotor location and watch which way it spins out. It's the same as a distributor. The synchronizer could also be the cause of the chirp. The Taurus is known for chirping synchronizes. The sound just like a belt chirp but its not the belt. Use a stethoscope on the cam sensor, if its chirping the synchronizer is bad. I see the code P1309 is for misfire monitor not enabled. The two codes could be related. The 4.2L are known for wearing out the harmonic balancer keyway. Take the belt off and grab the crank pulley try moving it forward or back. Any movement and its bad. Worth a look because the crank trigger mounts to the balancer. Good luck!
