Default Bad Fuel pump, or Relay Advice

I have a 2001 f150 5.4 extended Cab 154,00 miles; For the last 6 months truck would intermittently not start ( turn over but not fire.)
I would give a blast of starting fluid to get it going (live in AZ so it’s not a temp thing.) Now that has stopped working, truck will fire up on staring fluid, but won’t stay running. Had to get it towed home yesterday.

Could it be the fuel pump, or the relay? If so would I need to take the bed off for the pump replacement? What would that procedure be? Do I need to take rear bumper off, and just slide the bed back? Or do I take the bed all the way off.

Thanks for your advice.

I'd check the relay before I messed with the pump. Check all the relays while your at it. You can either pull the bed or drop the tank, I dropped the tank when I did mine

Is there a test for the relay, or do I just replace and see if that works?

PS; of course the tank is full

I think the horn uses a relay. If the horn works swap that relay out with the fuel pump or PCM relay and check if the horn works then.

& if you have 25 gallons of gas in there you might wanna pull the bed, unless you wanna siphon it all out. Mine was almost empty when it happened

would the relay cause it to "sputter, or sort of diesel" at times during start up?

A relay is just a switch its on or off so I would doubt its the relay sounds like our pump was weak and just finally gave out but the bed is eay to remove 6 bolts in the bed the tail light plug by the bumper and the hose clamp on the filler neck that clamps to the bed in the fender two strong friend is all it takes to remove and u need to put a blanket over the bumper and the front of the bed to keep from scratching the paint up and the pump is nothin to change I'd recommend the whole assembly just cause its smart to replace all with new while u got the bed off

Definitely sounds like a pump.
