All depends on the scope of the work. I took a body shop class years ago at the local community college and it opened up my eyes at why it costs so much for a good paint job. Yes you can expect it to be over $2000

You get what you pay for.
Here's what the brothers in the hood used to do.....
Do all your body etc yourself, prime with a compatible primer. (I have a friend that did this in high school and used rustoleum primer because he thought it was compatible with the DuPont centauri enamel and the paint guy said it wasn't and charged him to reprime). Scuff existing paint etc with Scotch-Brite pad. Go to the car wash and spray it all off. Drive 55 mph to facto bake. Tape it off in the parking lot. Pay them to paint it, only to paint it. You can get it done for cheap. $2000
But generally if you want a quality paint job and you want somebody else to do all the work and probably looking at more like 6K if there's no real body work involved at all. Sand... tape... paint a couple of coats and a couple of coats of clear. Wet sand buff etc.
As someone said most body shops like doing small jobs. They can charge outrageous prices for small jobs that don't take very long at all.
