In my 98 4.6 i ran Royal purple 5\30 and a K&N oil filter...Never had a problem with the engine 240k when i sold it...It also had a rough life.... Around 150k miles i switched to a 10\30 (if i recall)

Personally I use Motorcraft 5w20 SemiSynthetic and a Motorcraft oil fiter. The Motorcraft oil filter has the check valve so the engine has oil immediately. I used to be a Valvoline user, but with my last 2 Fords, I've kept with factory parts.

Now ford recomends 5w-30 for the older 4.6 liter. If you do not believe me read your owners manual. As for synthetic vs semi synthetic. More or less personal preference, and budget. There are multiple links here.

Those are a few. Just google "what oil to use". While your at it google "orange can of death" this refers to fram filters a no no for our engines.
The 5w30 is still in the manual but it has since been updated to 5w20 for all 97-03 Triton motors. That link to f150online, they are referring to 3v 5.4L for the 04-08 trucks.

Get 6 qts of Motorcraft 5w-20 and Motorcraft 820 oil filter. I've always used Motorcraft oil and filters in my Ford's and never had any hassle. It's also recommended by Ford so...

5w20 is to thin I think. Put 5w-30 valvoline full synthetic with a quart of Lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer. And your golden.
