I do have a 4x4 and yes I will use it if I have to but the hell with playing in the mud just because it rains. When I was younger I use to do it all the time (just about everytime it rained) but then I woke up and realized that I'm just tearing up my truck and plus cleaning all that damn mud off, just flat out sucks. My current truck has never been in the mud (clean undercarriage) and I plan on keeping it that way as long as possible.
Come to think about I can't remember the last time I went out playin in the mud.

I think it depends on the individual. If you want to have fun, go for it! As far as rust is concerned, a clean truck is a happy truck. Giving it a good scrub after a day's fun will prevent any concerns. My only advice would be to make sure you get all the mud from inside the inner rear fender lip. If mud is allowed to remain, it will hold moisture and inevitably cause corrosion. After pressure washing inside the fender, run your finger around the inner lip of the fender. Still mud? Keep washing until its gone. Other than that, use common sense and you'll be fine.

I mudded the hell out of my 03 XL regular cab. I also jumped it and went down more rutted bumpy roads hauling *** than I drove on pavement. It was a blast don't get me wrong but I beat the **** out of that thing. Replaced the driveline, hubs, ball joints, the list goes on and on. Treating a truck like a four wheeler makes it a money pit. My truck would constantly nickel an dime me and about every couple months I'd end up spending about 1000 on parts. The tranny was starting to slip at 88,000 just before I rolled it. It also made clunking and banging noises that me my dad and the ford dealership couldn't figure out. Moral of the story.. It gets expensive, very expensive. But that was my first truck and that's what redneck teenagers do with their first trucks haha. Will I ever mud my new 03 screw lariat? Hell no! Will I eventually buy a highboy or bronco strictly for mudding. Yes sir haha

Even our trucks rust quicker after mudding. I've been one time just to say I did and it was pretty stupid with my bald street tires and lack of tow hooks at that point lol. All my friends at school give me crap for not taking it all the time, but mine isn't down near as much as theirs for repairs. I'm still on my original transmission and rearend unlike them. Plus it's a PITA to totally clean it afterwards.

You can take your truck mudding without going all out ***** to the wall and still have a blast. Before I had to move into the city for school I would take my trucks through the mud all the time, mostly pretty shallow stuff that never really got me stuck but I still had a great time.
I really thrashed my 93 reg cab short box with the 4.9 and a 5 speed, even got it stuck so bad we had to get a excavator to get me out, and I never had a problem or broke anything.
As long as you keep up on maintenance you will be fine. A lot of people ignore their dif fluid but it should be changed anytime you spend some time in deep mud or water.

No unnecessary mudding for me.
