Default Parking Brake Adjustment HELP!!!

hey all, i just spent the afternoon replacing the parking brake pedal and the front half of the cable on my 2000 f-150 ext cab because the old one broke on me a few weeks ago. only problem is now it will not engage, there isn't' enough tension to engage the brakes.

i read somewhere that i can tighten up the cables by removing a rubber grommet and adjust some star screw, but i do not know the location of this grommet and bit. can anyone help? thanks in advance.

Look on the inner side of the rear brake housing. You'll see the slot.

The parking brake is self adjusting. Your adjusting the shoes through that slot (you can just stick a flatblade in there and adjust up/down). Jack it up, and spin the wheel, you want a very SLIGHT drag on the shoes basicaly where you can just hear/feel them engaging with no pressure on the brake pedal.

Do that and drive it/engage the parking brake a few times and it should be good.

with my old parking brake it would have to put a bit of force behind the pedal in order for it to engage all the way. this new one i can push it in by hand with no effort. is there a way to tighten up the cable?

The parking brake is *not* self-adjusting. You must manually adjust it.

I find that hard to believe. But I thought these were drum brakes then I realized they are probably the disc with drum e brake? If so I havent worked on those so I could be wrong.

That is according to the service manual. If you have the discs, there is nothing to adjust the drums.

Well ya if you have disc only then theres nothing to adjust except the cable itself. If it has a drum only there is shoe adjustement and it should have a self adjusting e brake. If its a hybrid disc/drum then im not sure.

I thought they were self adjusting and tightened everytime the truck was put into reverse and the regular brakes were applied. I could be completely wrong though I havent had any issues(or manually adjusted) mine.
