Im not sure your familiar with old chevy's but is it basically the same difference as the 10 bolt rearends and the 12 bolt?

No if I remember correctly the 10 bolt is smaller than a Dana 44, the 9.75 would be comparable to a Dana 60 except the 9.75 isn't a full floater

Four Wheeler did a build on a 9.75 comparing it to a dana 60. They said it was just about as good for a build but much more available and much more affordable

Yeah I remember reading that a couple years back. The sterling is a 9.75 ring gear with 34 spline and the 60 is the same size ring gear and came with 32 and 35 spline shafts
