Default Took a chance buying another F-150

My son-in-law took a chance on buying another 99 F-150 XLT 4X4 supercab with 108K mi. after his first 99 burnt to the ground due to an engine fire. The chance we took is that we could not drive the truck due to leaking transmission lines, brake lines and a power steering line all due to rust. Guy was asking $2,900 but took $1,000 for it. It's a fairly sound truck with rust on the inside bottom of both front doors and rust inside and out of the right rear door. Rockers are still intact but starting to show some rust bubbles. We have a solid right rear door for it that we bought for his first 99. We just never had a chance to put it on. We replaced all the transmission lines, rear axle brake lines, power steering line and the battery. Took it out for a test drive and everything appears good except for a severe engine miss during acceleration. Next step is to figure that out. Any ideas.

If you have the 5.4 then I would say coil packs. Did you happen to wash the engine bay at all. Water and coil packs don't mix well.

It has the 5.4. I don't have a code reader. Need to get plates on it tomorrow and take it to my buddies. The truck sat for a while. Maybe some condensation in the tank.

If you have an autozone in your area, take it there and they will check the codes for free. It sound to me like a problem that can be easily fixed and you got a great deal on the truck. A common problem with these truck is water or oil leaking in the engine compartment and getting down in the spark plug sockets and causing a misfire. Especially the rear plugs. check for water where the heater hoses connect to the heater core. Also, if you find a misfire plug, then you clean it up and it seems to run fine for a while, then starts missing again, you can be almost positive it is water getting into the plug.

Change fuel filter, coils and plugs. Then clean the TB, MAF, IAC etc... Doing that stuff is relatively cheap and you can do it in a day.

Update on the $1,000 truck. Money pitt or good buy I'm not sure at this point. Drove the truck to my son-in-laws friends shop. He replaced the plugs and checked the cops. The miss cleared up. He was test driving the truck and all forward gears went out, only reverse would work. Went to the transmission shop. Apparently the transmission was damaged at some point. Probably due to driving it with low or no transmission fluid. $1,700 later and it's back on the road but now the miss is back.

Took it to the dealership to have the recall on the gas tank straps performed. They won't touch it because the tank is leaking, unless they replace the tank at a cost of over $1,000. Junk material in original straps caused damage to the tank but that"s another story.

Pulled the bed off the truck and removed the gas tank. Removed the gas tank from his burned out 99. Tank looks good and was probably replaced at one time. Going to clean the tank and go to the dealership to pick up the new gas tank straps which they were willing to give us.

Also going to replace the brake line from the ABS to the rear axle now that we have the bed off.

The only thing left to do will be to address the miss.

Did we get a deal or buy a money pit? Time will tell.
