Took a chance buying another F-150

Update on the $1,000 truck. Money pitt or good buy I'm not sure at this point. Drove the truck to my son-in-laws friends shop. He replaced the plugs and checked the cops. The miss cleared up. He was test driving the truck and all forward gears went out, only reverse would work. Went to the transmission shop. Apparently the transmission was damaged at some point. Probably due to driving it with low or no transmission fluid. $1,700 later and it's back on the road but now the miss is back.
Took it to the dealership to have the recall on the gas tank straps performed. They won't touch it because the tank is leaking, unless they replace the tank at a cost of over $1,000. Junk material in original straps caused damage to the tank but that"s another story.
Pulled the bed off the truck and removed the gas tank. Removed the gas tank from his burned out 99. Tank looks good and was probably replaced at one time. Going to clean the tank and go to the dealership to pick up the new gas tank straps which they were willing to give us.
Also going to replace the brake line from the ABS to the rear axle now that we have the bed off.
The only thing left to do will be to address the miss.
Did we get a deal or buy a money pit? Time will tell.

My thought was to swap the tranny from the burnt truck but his mechanic friend advised against it due to possible damage. The only thing wrong with the tank was melted wiring to the fuel pump.

You could have bought a 3 or 5 thousand dollar truck and had to put a 1700 dollar transmission in it a week later. You could have bought a 4000 dollar truck and drove it for 100k problem free miles, You'll never know.
But you do know what you have in this one and its a bunch of new common problem parts in the rust belt and your still under like whole truck purchase prices.
I paid $2100 for mine and dumped $2000 into it, $900 was tyres but the rest was common problems they all face even for money initial purchase price. E.g. Exhaust Manifolds issues and neglected maintenance.

Hang in there because I think you are close to getting a really great truck for a great price. For the miss, look at dirt, grease and water in the spark plug sockets which is very common for these trucks. Leaks of oil come from the valve covers, bad PCV valve, and water leaks come from the heater hoses. All of these require work but not a lot of expense. For the 99 truck, I would do a radiator flush and replace all the hoses as this is just good maintenance for an old truck (unless of course you find that the hoses are new). Snug down the valve covers if they are leaking. Also change out the PVC as this can be done for only about $4. Then, pull the plugs, clean out the sockets with a round wire brush, WD40, and rags. Put in new premium plugs. If the valve covers continue to leak oil, you will need to pull them and replace the gasket.
