If you read my next reply, yes all the tires are the same! I just heard that there is a vacuum solenoid on the front diff. But find it hard to believe that would make the transfer case jump into hi or low when I'm driving.sorry it I sound upset I'm very frustrated at this point. I got the truck cheap from a friend and was told all is good with it.

Well, I sort of felt like one. That's twice in one day
Anyway, all I can say about the problem and this has happened a few different times in the past. When the shift motor locked up like that, guys would simply uninstall then reinstall the motor. It seemed to work, I don't recall hearing any more from those users about the topic.
Also, I would take a look the GEM if was at the point of running out of ideas. There's a direct correlation there. A wet GEM can cause these kinds of issues as well. It's in control. When the pins short inside the connector it gets lost. For that it's a matter of removing, inspecting for water intrusion (very common), drying it out, then protecting the connection with a dielectric grease or some other kind of method.

I'm at a loss, can't find GEM for the 4 wheel drive! Every thing I've been reading told me it was on the back of the fues box, so we took out the fues box and it's not on the back. Changed the oil in the transfer case (it had less than a qt). We put 2qts in it and it started switching from 2hi to 4 low before it stayed in 4 hi and that's where it is now stuck in 4 hi.

Have you tried pulling the shift motor off and manually switching it? It should shift pretty easy. You can actually put a piece of rubber hose with a hose clamp on the triangular nub and it will shift. I put some photos of a Ranger below explaining what I mean. By no means am I suggesting you cut a hole in your floor like this guy did, but rather I wanted to show you how easy it should shift. Just be dang sure you have the wheels chocked, parking brake on, etc.

BTW, which fuse panel did you take out? It is on the back of the fuse panel under the steering wheel. Take out the 2 screws I marked... I think that's all, but there may be two more. Anyway, remove the screws and pull the GEM up while wiggling it a bit.

I tried pulling the motor off and switching it by hand it won't switch into 2wheel. Thank you for the pic of the GEM it's the best one I've seen yet. I will pull it out again.
