Had my first child man. Lil girl that is 2 months old and got a new instructors Job at Marshall University. I will have lots of time this summer to show off my build.

As for the OP, have no fear, this is a very easy process if you take your time. Once you finish you will know wheter or not the torque is correct. If you can twist it by hand and have any play, not enough torque. Torque to spec and rotate around 1/8 turn more to reset the sleeve in the new position.

So I have been busy with the new job and have been looking at just taking the truck in to have this done since I need my parking brakes installed (looks like previous owner deleted them) which would explain it never working. And the shop I went to quoted me $100 for the diff pinion seal and the rear parking brakes with me bringing the parts. Can anyone tell me why they are telling me the rear brakes/rotors need to be removed to do the rear diff pinion seal? They know which seal it is and not the axle seals....

Congrats! It's fun being a Dad... most of the time. What are you teaching at Marshall?

Because they are quoting it as resetting the pinion depth. It does not need to come out if you use the method I posted.

Oh okay, thanks for letting me know. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't talking to someone who had no idea what they are doing. Must be what the factory service manual describes

Yes, most likely that's what "the book" says. I can probably actually look that up... let me see what I can find.

Alright, this is what I get for "the book" labor - 1.3 hours. To me, that labor is doing it the way we've all recommended. Unfortunately, it does not give me their step by step, just the hours, and lets me add parts. Their book might be different though... but I think this is pretty standard.

Oooops.... looks like I didn't add the most important part, the seal. LOL

Seal added. I get 208.07 total, out the door. Which really isn't all that bad.

I just did this and considering it took me 30 minutes TOPS first time, going slow and 20$ I'd say 208 is pretty damn bad!

I agree, these labor costs people pay make me really appreciate my old man for teaching me to wrench when I was young!
